Energetic Connections in Dance

Dancing in a group improvisation setting can evoke a wonderful feeling of connection and belonging, especially as we build familiarity with our fellow dancers. It's that exhilarating sensation that replaces the initial nerves, allowing us to let go, feel supported, and embrace the flow of movement.

This magical feeling comes from more than just the physical movements and technique; it's also rooted in our emotional and energetic connections. When we can tune into our energy and emotions, we can learn to better align with those around us, taking our practice and performances to a whole new level.

Our movements stem from our physical anatomy, but the emotions and energy we infuse into them come from our subtle, energetic anatomy.

While I could spend days talking just about energetic anatomy and how it relates to dance (oh hey…I do),  today I just want to give you taste of something that will help you dive even deeper into your dance practice. This is especially relevant since we have been working on duets and connection all month.

Tuning into the sensation and emotion begins with an awareness of your physical and energetic self. Posture and breath are key.

Try this quick exercise:

Stand tall in dance posture, focusing on broadening your shoulders and lifting your chest slightly

Lift your arms out to your sides. Elbows up. Just like you were about to start the Wrap Around Turn.

Inhale deeply through your nose, feeling the expansion in your chest and heart space.

Add a soft smile and imagine standing in front of one of your favorite dance partners.

Feel that sensation? For many, it's a flutter in the heart or a flip in the stomach. This feeling is integral to dancing, especially improvisation, where we're not just moving our bodies but also connecting with the music, our fellow dancers, and even the audience.

Imagine being able to tune into these emotions while we dance, altering them to match the energy of the music or influence the audience's experience. This ability can transform not just your dance but also your relationships and life.

As you learn how your emotions impact you physically, you'll discover how to use your body to influence your emotions. Ever wonder why certain moves make you feel a certain way? Yep…it works both ways. This is part of the mind-body connection.

I’m excited for you to take Daniela Niemietz’s very first class on fcbdU, Introduction to Emotional Competence.
